An overview of UNP
A brief introduction to the Universal Naming Protocol (UNP) is presented. UNP specifies a generic attribute-based name server upon which a variety of high-level naming services, including white- and yellow-page services, can be built
EMASS (trademark): An expandable solution for NASA space data storage needs
The data acquisition, distribution, processing, and archiving requirements of NASA and other U.S. Government data centers present significant data management challenges that must be met in the 1990's. The Earth Observing System (EOS) project alone is expected to generate daily data volumes greater than 2 Terabytes (2 x 10(exp 12) Bytes). As the scientific community makes use of this data, their work will result in larger, increasingly complex data sets to be further exploited and managed. The challenge for data storage systems is to satisfy the initial data management requirements with cost effective solutions that provide for planned growth. The expendable architecture of the E-Systems Modular Automated Storage System (EMASS(TM)), a mass storage system which is designed to support NASA's data capture, storage, distribution, and management requirements into the 21st century is described
Accessing files in an Internet: The Jade file system
Jade is a new distribution file system that provides a uniform way to name and access files in an internet environment. It makes two important contributions. First, Jade is a logical system that integrates a heterogeneous collection of existing file systems, where heterogeneous means that the underlying file systems support different file access protocols. Jade is designed under the restriction that the underlying file system may not be modified. Second, rather than providing a global name space, Jade permits each user to define a private name space. These private name spaces support two novel features: they allow multiple file systems to be mounted under one directory, and they allow one logical name space to mount other logical name spaces. A prototype of the Jade File System was implemented on Sun Workstations running Unix. It consists of interfaces to the Unix file system, the Sun Network File System, the Andrew File System, and FTP. This paper motivates Jade's design, highlights several aspects of its implementation, and illustrates applications that can take advantage of its features

THE TRANSITION FROM MARKET VALUATION TO INCOME VALUATION: INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL SHIFT ANALYSES FOR SOUTH DAKOTA
Agricultural land in South Dakota has traditionally been valued for property tax purposes by the market approach. Since this valuation approach relies upon comparable sales data, property values imitate trends in the agricultural land market. Interest in changing the state's market valuation approach to an income valuation approach surfaced in the late 1970's and resurfaced in the late 1990's amidst rising land values, structural changes within agriculture, and employment shifts to other industries. Agricultural land valuation pilot studies gained public attention since South Dakota, in the absence of a state income tax, relies upon sales tax, at the state level, and property tax, at the local level, to provide necessary revenue for public services. The 2002 statewide study addressed whether or not agricultural lands could be valued according to an income capitalization approach without creating any valuation shifts from the present market approach. This paper examines two types of valuation shifts identified during the study: 1) external valuation shifts between agricultural landowners and nonagricultural property owners and 2) internal valuation shifts between crop landowners and range/pasture landowners.Agribusiness,
Exophthalmometry: A comparison study emplying the Hertel exophthalmometer and the Corneal Reflection pupilometer
The project was designed to determine if there was any correlation at the 0.05 level of significance between exophthalmometry as performed using methodology developed with the Corneal Reflection Pupilometer, as compared with that gathered via the standard Hertel technique. Using 540 measurements with each device, we found that a 0.8mm measurement difference between the two methods is not statistically different. The standard error measurement with the CRP was 0.0368 mm when compared with Hertel readings on an identical population while disregarding no subjects. The data interpretation shows a very high coefficient of determination indicating inter-instrument agreement. The fact that the Hertel device is considered the yardstick of exophthalmometry and assumes an accuracy level to within 2 mm taken to extension indicates that the CRP is as accurate and reliable when used in the prescribed fashion
Characteristics of Chapter 12 Farm Reorganization Bankruptcy Filings and Approved Reorganization Plans
Chapter 12 farm reorganization bankruptcy has been available to financially stressed family farms since November, 1986. This report is one of the first empirical studies that examines the major financial characteristics of Chapter 12 farm debtors and their creditors. Debt reduction characteristics of 101 reorganization plans in South Dakota are presented
Commodity Trading Room Comes On-Line at UNL
Commodity markets are central to Nebraska抯 economy. The study of agricultural marketing concepts, tools and strategies as they relate to risk management for agricultural producers, commodity merchandisers, processors and other traders are essential for students seeking a career in the agribusiness industry
Some Issues of Security and Stability Associated With Farmland Leasing
Several issues of security and stability in farmland leasing arrangements were examined in South Dakota and Nebraska surveys conducted during 1986. These issues are important because farmland leasing is increasingly an integral component of production agriculture and represents one means of decreasing financial risk
